John & Bert Stevenson will Address the October Meeting of the NEPGS

Bert Stevenson, Ella Stevenson Haley and John H. Stevenson.
John Stevenson and his brother, Bert, will address the October meeting of the NEPA Genealogical Society with the introduction of their recently published book, “Our Back Mountain Families”.  The book provides short biographies of twelve families that came to the back mountain area, and for the most part stayed there.  In addition to birth, death, and marriage data, each biography provides information on occupations, residences, and other life events.

The authors, Bert Stevenson, John H. Stevenson, and Ella Stevenson Haley, are siblings that were born and raised in the Back Mountain area of Shavertown.  This project, a labor of love, has provided the family with many enjoyable hours visiting cousins, cemeteries, and historical societies while preparing the book for publication.

Bert and John will present some of the book’s contents, but the emphasis of the meeting will project what they learned about the families during their research, and how other researchers can learn from their experiences in publishing this 600 page, 4,400 names index and family histories of many Back Mountain residents.  They will make their presentations on Tuesday, October, 22, 2013 at 7:00 P. M. in room 104, William G. McGowan Building, West Union and North River Streets, King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, PA.

At the October meeting there will be a short business meeting for Society members to elect officers for the next two years.

Joe Grandinetti to address NEPGS September Meeting at King's College

Joe Grandinetti

Joe Grandinetti will address the NEPA Genealogical Society meeting on Tuesday, September 24th at 7:00 P. M. in room 104, William G. McGowan Building, West Union and North Streets, King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Joe Grandinetti, a CPA employed by ParenteBeard LLC for more than 20 years, will present an exciting family tree research on “Searching my Maternal Irish Roots – Finding the Needles in the Haystack”.  He has a passion for genealogical research and has spent the past 30 years researching his Italian and Irish heritage. He visited Ireland in 2002 and enjoyed a second visit in mid-August 2013 to his maternal grandparents’ homeland in counties Galway and Donegal, Ireland to research and visit Quinn and McGill family members still living in these same areas.  His great grandfather, Michael Quinn, and several siblings came to America in the 1870s and 1880s from county Galway, and his grandmother, Anne McGill, born in 1898 in County Donegal, came to Wilkes-Barre in 1926.
Joe plans to speak on the topic of Irish Genealogical research with a focus on the methods and techniques he used in researching his family ties.  He will discuss various resources including civil and church records, the Tithe Applotment, Griffith’s Primary Valuation, and subsequent land transfer records, immigration and citizenship data, and U. S., and English census information.  Using PowerPoint, he will talk about and display photos from both trips to Ireland where he stayed with family members.

He has spoken to other groups on the topic of genealogy, and has written genealogical articles for Family Chronicle Magazine, Primo Magazine, and Dearcadh (an annual historical/cultural publication in Ardara, county Donegal).
For additional information, please contact Lavada Riggins at 610-298-8417.  Visitors and non-members are welcome.
